Construction has officially begun on the Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge, a colorful, elevated walkway designed by French conceptual artist Daniel Buren to enhance pedestrian and bicycle connectivity in Miami Beach. The City of Miami Beach, in collaboration with developers Terra and GFO Investments, held a groundbreaking ceremony at 500 Alton Road to commemorate the milestone.

The 158-foot-long enclosed bridge will span Fifth Street, linking the South of Fifth and West Avenue neighborhoods. Once complete, it will seamlessly connect the Beachwalk at South Pointe Park to the forthcoming Baywalk, enhancing accessibility for both residents and visitors. Designed with vibrant, translucent panels, the structure will create a dynamic interplay of light and color across the walkway and surrounding streetscape.

“This project isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about safety, accessibility, and walkability,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “By providing a secure and enjoyable way to cross one of our busiest roadways, we’re making Miami Beach safer and more connected.”

The bridge is being developed as part of a public-private partnership with the team behind Five Park, a 48-story condominium tower designed by Arquitectonica, which opened last year. In 2022, Terra and GFO Investments also delivered Canopy Park, a public green space adjacent to the development.

“Daniel Buren’s visionary design elevates a simple pedestrian bridge into a work of art while providing much-needed accessibility and connectivity between some of our city’s most vibrant neighborhoods,” said David Martin, CEO of Terra. “We are proud to partner with the City of Miami Beach and GFO Investments to deliver this landmark as part of the Five Park development.”

The pedestrian bridge is partially funded by the General Obligation Bond, which was approved by Miami Beach voters in 2018. It is expected to be completed by summer or fall 2026, further enhancing mobility and public space activation in the city’s evolving urban landscape.

  1. Hideous, hot, and a LOT of stairs to climb.

  2. It took a “conceptual artist” to design something so low effort and cheap looking?
