Construction has officially commenced on a Holiday Inn that’s been in the works for close to a decade. Proposed in 2016, original plans called for 142 rooms in eight stories, comprising 135,000 square feet of new construction and costing $25 million. Now, according to a recent report from the South Florida Business Journal, the venture, still measuring eight stories, will host 144 rooms and cost just over $40 million to complete.
Waterstone Holiday Inn LLC purchased the project’s 28,718-square-foot build site for $1.2 million in 2015. Although it sought approval a year later, rising construction costs, combined with the Covid-19 pandemic, delayed groundbreaking. Cornerstone Building Group, also based in Bay Harbor Islands, is the general contractor.

Our sources don’t officially name a construction deadline, but generally, projects of this scope can take anywhere from a year to 18 months to complete. Prior to the start of construction, the build site was home to an antiques store that has since closed and been demolished.
The 144-room Holiday Inn isn’t the only hotel undergoing construction in the Sunshine State. In June, Florida YIMBY covered Cloud One Hotel & Residences. Also measuring eight stories, the luxury venture will offer both high-end condos and hotel rooms. The Miami-based project is scheduled for a 2027 completion.
The new Holiday Inn is currently undergoing construction at 2100-2114 S Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33316, in Broward County.
