The Tampa Bay Rays’ search for a new stadium has finally come to an end. Our sources indicate that the Major League Baseball team has announced plans for a billion-dollar stadium in St. Petersburg’s Historic Gas Plant District.
The new 30,000-seat stadium is slated to open in 2028, offering three seating levels, a fixed roof, and an artificial turf field. The ballpark itself will measure 15 to 20 acres. But the stadium is just one piece of a much larger, mixed-use development.

The baseball stadium will be surrounded by eight million square feet of mixed-use space, including an African American heritage museum, thousands of multifamily homes, and hundreds of thousands of feet of green space. Conceptual renderings suggest that the museum will be an expanded version of the Woodson African American Museum of Florida, which is located in the region.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and the Tampa Bay Rays will split the construction costs. The Tampa Bay Business Journal reports that at the time of publication, it wasn’t clear how the entities would split the billion-dollar price tag.
The stadium will be near Tropicana Field.
The new baseball stadium and mixed-use surroundings do not have an exact address as of yet. However, it will be near Tropicana Field. The Tampa Bay Rays’ residency ends there in 2027, just a year before the new stadium’s predicted opening.
