Lincoln Road Enters New Era With City of Miami Beach’s $29.4 Million Upgrade At 16th Street

Miami Beach has broken ground on Phase II of its $29.4 million upgrade to Lincoln Road, the city’s iconic pedestrian promenade. A ceremony held on Friday, September 5, brought together city officials, project partners, and community representatives to mark the beginning of construction, which will bring new outdoor seating and an extended pedestrian experience to the landmark corridor.

“This landmark investment ensures Lincoln Road continues to be an iconic Miami Beach destination,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “We are creating a safer, more vibrant, world-class pedestrian experience and I am committed to delivering this transformation.”

First developed in 1912 by Carl Fisher as the “Fifth Avenue of the South,” Lincoln Road was reimagined in the 1950s by Miami Beach architect Morris Lapidus, who famously designed the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels. Lapidus later described Lincoln Road as “the one place that gives me the greatest pleasure,” citing its fountains, pools, waterfalls, and whimsical design features integrated into the commercial landscape.

The yearlong initiative will also pedestrianize Drexel Avenue, creating north-to-south connectivity that will improve access for residents and visitors to surrounding cultural and civic destinations, including The Fillmore Miami Beach, New World Center, Soundscape Park, Miami Beach Convention Center, City Hall, Pride Park, and the forthcoming Grand Hyatt Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel.

Designed by Field Operations and constructed by Buslam, the project will introduce new outdoor seating, upgraded sidewalks, additional public seating, improved lighting, landscaping, and new traffic signals at Drexel Avenue and 16th Street.

All businesses along Lincoln Road will remain open and accessible throughout the duration of the revitalization.
