Construction is complete on the first phase of a $400 million multi-phase emergency department expansion and renovation at Jackson Health System’s Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Designed by HKS and built by Skanska USA, the newly opened emergency department spans more than 178,000 square feet and replaces two former buildings that were demolished to make way for the expanded facility. The project doubles the emergency department’s previous footprint as part of a long-term modernization of one of the nation’s largest public healthcare campuses.

The first phase introduces 60 general examination rooms, four resuscitation rooms, six triage rooms, and 12 fast-track treatment rooms intended to improve patient throughput and reduce wait times. A dedicated second floor houses 50 observation rooms and seven acute care rooms, while the expanded department also includes a full in-house radiology suite with MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound services, as well as an on-site pharmacy for rapid medication dispensing. The project also required the relocation and installation of underground utilities to support the larger medical complex.

Work is continuing on the second phase of the expansion, which will renovate and enlarge the existing 45,000-square-foot emergency department. Upon completion, the facility will include 121 adult emergency treatment rooms, dedicated behavioral health bays, and 30 pediatric emergency rooms. Construction is scheduled to conclude in 2027.
A third and final phase will further expand the facility with a new third floor containing additional clinical space and a new rooftop helipad. The helipad will complement the existing landing facility at the Ryder Trauma Center, increasing the hospital’s capacity to receive emergency air transports.

The Jackson Memorial project continues Skanska’s portfolio of healthcare construction projects across Florida. Previous work includes the Project D Floor Modernizations at Jackson Memorial Hospital, completed in 2019, the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute in Downtown Orlando, the expansion and renovation of Gulf Coast Medical Center, and renovations at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
