Westfield Broward Mall, known colloquially to residents as “the Broward Mall,” opened its doors in 1978––just 12 years before its largest competitor, Sawgrass Mills Mall, commenced operations. Now, after serving Plantation, FL, for nearly 40 years, the property has been surrendered to its lender.

The mall, resting on over 30 acres of land, comprises stores such as Dillard’s, Macy’s, and Victoria’s Secret. However, after owing nearly $95 million foreclosure complaints, the area could soon be rezoned as residential space.
The foreclosure will not affect the already-existing department stores since they are owned by private retailers. These stores, which make up over 469,000 square feet, may start shutting their doors once the deal is finalized.

Many Broward County residents have long anticipated the mall’s eventual closing––although there is no word on when (if at all) the mall will cease operations. It’s also not the only mall closure in the area.
In 1988, the “Fashion Mall,” also located in Plantation, ceased operations after being open for less than 20 years. It was entirely demolished in 2017. The 200,000 square foot space will soon make way for luxury homes, retailers, and commercial space.

Still, Westfield Broward Mall maintains operations seven days a week during normal business hours. Its physical location is 8000 W. Broward Blvd. and 499 S. University Drive, Plantation, FL, 33388. However, if anything like its predecessors, it may not remain for long.
