A platting intake has been submitted by Resorts World Miami LLC and Miami-Dade County for the Monorail Transit Subdivision. The filing is in accordance with the proposal to connect Downtown Miami to Miami Beach via a monorail transit system crossing over via the MacArthur Causeway, which is currently in the development stages. The elevated trunkline would begin at Genting Group‘s Herald Plaza development site, where Resorts World Miami is planned, and end at Washington Avenue and 5th Street in Miami Beach.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works is working with MBM Partners LLC in a temporary agreement to complete pre-development work and prepare the final project agreement for approval by county commissioners. According to Miami Today, the expected completion of a 3.45-mile monorail is 2026. Two trains would run constantly at 12 trips per hour, each with a 300-rider capacity, according to the Miami Beach Monorail Consortium, whose main investor is Meridian.
In October 2020, county commissioners approved an $14 million interim agreement with MBM Parters LLC, lead by Genting and Meridian Capital, setting an 18-month schedule to do pre-development work and negotiate an agreement to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a monorail connecting downtown Miami and Miami Beach for the segment of the county’s Smart transportation plan called the Beach Corridor Causeway Extension Trunkline. A final plan and budget would have to go before the commission again.
The monorail system is being planned to be connected with Miami’s Metromover and Metrorail system’s, with expansions plans to reach into Wynwood and the Design District.
