Central East Florida could soon be home to one of the state’s biggest solar farms. The Orlando Business Journal reports that Avalon Park Group Management Inc. has 6,253 acres under contract right now. It hopes to start construction on a solar farm that will generate more than 300 megawatts. The Daytona News Journal notes that just one megawatt is enough to power 150 to 200 homes.
Sources report that the development could cost $323 million to complete. Construction isn’t expected to start before 2023. Power Technology reports that the endeavor will reach completion in one phase. It’s a ground-mounted solar project, meaning the panels themselves will rest just a few inches above the ground, rather than on poles.
Right now, most of the 6,253-acre plot is undeveloped timberland. At this time, the solar farm’s presently in its beginning design phases. Sources do not list a general contractor or architect. However, they do report that the solar farm isn’t the only exciting venture happening in Volusia County.
Nearby, Avalon Park at Daytona Beach is unfolding. The 3,000-acre-plus master-planned community broke ground earlier in 2021. It will offer 10,000 homes and more than one million square feet of commercial space. It could be one of the biggest residential communities in the county—and developers hope the solar farm will meet its energy consumption needs.
