In 2014, Fifteen 1836 Biscayne LLC purchased First Church of Christ Scientist, a historic building erected in 1926. Now, nearly eight years later, it plans to build a 40-story tower right next door. The tower will measure 450 feet tall, having secured approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in September 2022.
According to the South Florida Business Journal, the residential tower will comprise more than 360 apartments and 389 parking spots. Sources report that the general contractor could start construction on the venture early next year. The project could cost around $57 million to complete.
The Next Miami reports that the former church will not be demolished to make way for new construction, as it was placed on the National Historic Register in 1989. However, the church itself could serve as commercial space. The church itself measures around 17,000 square feet.
Conceptual renderings show a high-rise tower with a neutral-colored façade. The church’s original elements will remain in place, although developers may make some improvements.
The community’s address is listed as 1836 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida, 33132, in Miami-Dade County. The development is east of I-95 and north of the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.
