On March 6, dozens of community leaders and elected officials gathered to commemorate the official groundbreaking of Gas Worx, a 50-acre mixed-use development in Ybor City, Tampa. Gas Worx, a joint venture between KETTLER and its founder and CEO, Darryl Shaw, is between the Ybor Historic District and Channel District. Designed by Design Collective with Bohler as the structural engineer and Sasaki as the urban planner, the development will include nearly 5,000 new residences, over 500,000 square feet of office space, and more than 140,000 square feet of new retail. Moreover, Gas Worx boasts more than 300 units of affordable housing – the biggest private investment in affordable housing in the city’s history.

“Today is a historic day for Ybor City. We needed the right partners with the right vision. Darryl Shaw and KETTLER are those partners and together we are bringing more housing, more jobs, and more vibrancy to this beloved neighborhood.” said Castor on the day of the ground breaking.

“Tampa is the most significant emerging market in Florida. We are honored to be a part of its story and find such incredible new partners here,” added Bob Kettler. “The roots of Ybor City are grounded in stories of people from diverse backgrounds who built the foundations we build on today. We are committed to protecting and enhancing Ybor’s unique character and honoring its cherished history.”

“The beauty of Ybor City is truly the people who call it home – engaged, passionate, and dedicated to this area. Today we celebrate each and every person who has left their mark here and I look forward to seeing more people call Ybor City home.” Shaw said. “Gas Worx will have a place for everyone.”

The Gas Worx district will extend over 5.9 million square feet, located north of Adamo Drive, west of North 15th Street, south of East Fifth Avenue, and east of East Scott Street. The first construction phase is already underway, which involves constructing a 317-unit apartment building and 2,500 square feet of retail space. Four buildings will be built in the next phase, comprising 800 apartments. Additionally, a significant aspect of this development is the revival of a 70,000 square feet warehouse from the 1950s.

Juneau Construction Company is the general contractor for the first phase, scheduled for delivery in 2024.

Great to see this project moving foward. I hope they also move forward with the waterfront element pitched a few months ago. Tampa has so much potential for growth.
