Sirata Beach Resort is getting a massive expansion that will add more than 300 rooms, our sources indicate. As it stands, the St. Petersburg hotel currently has 382 guest rooms. With the expansion, plans call for the construction of two mid-rise hotels, measuring nine and 10 stories above grade.
The 10-story venture, under the Marriott banner, will host 290 rooms. It would lie on the north end of the 13-acre property, featuring a fourth-floor amenity deck with a bar and dining area. The nine-story hotel, a Hampton Inn, will offer 130 guestrooms. It would sit on the property’s southern end.
St. Pete Rising reports that the proposal, filed back in early 2023, would eliminate 50 rooms at the resort to make way for a standalone restaurant and swimming pool. Upon completion, the two towers would boost the Sirata Beach Resort’s rooms to 646, nearly a 144 percent increase.
Currently, Kentucky-based Columbia Sussex owns the hotel, having purchased it for $200 million in late 2022. It plans to spend another $250 million to complete the resort’s expansion. While St. Petersburg officials narrowly approved the project, it was not without complications.
Many community members are concerned the project would obstruct the St. Petersburg skyline and increase the region’s traffic density. The project currently has a conditional use permit. It’s located at 5300 Gulf Boulevard, St. Petersburg, Florida, 33706, in Pinellas County.
