The Shops of Sunset Place, which was built in 1999, has become mostly vacant in recent years. Currently home to a movie theater, 40 apartments, and some office and retail space, the venture could soon find new life as a massive, mixed-use venture. The revitalization, known as “Sunset Place”, would span 1.47 million square feet amongst nine high-rise towers.

Here’s the residential aspect: 1,513 units spanning from studio to multi-bedroom units in seven buildings. Each tower would feature a rooftop swimming pool. Plans also call for a 1,300-seat theater and 60,000 square feet of offices—along with 150,000 square feet of commercial space.

Our sources report that of that square footage, 75 percent (112,500 square feet) would be restaurants, and the remaining 25 percent (37,500 square feet) would be retail. London-based Heatherwick Studio and Hollywood-based ODP Architecture and Design designed Sunset Place.

If Sunset Place comes to fruition, it would take shape on a 10.1-acre site, with “3.37 acres of open space among the new buildings.” Midtown Opportunities purchased the strip mall for $65.1 million in 2021. The site was previously approved for 414 apartments and a 182-room hotel, although these plans never came to fruition.

Sunset Place would be located at 5701-5795 S.W. 72nd St., Miami, FL, 33143, in Miami-Dade County.
