The St. Pete Beach City Commission has plans to review a proposal for a controversial hotel soon. Windward Pass Resort would measure six stories above grade (54 feet) and offer 104 rooms. Aside from the on-site accommodations, plans also call for two outdoor bars, a mini-golf course, arcade, and lazy river. The venture would also feature a 190-spot parking garage and manicured landscaping.
The Tampa Bay Business Journal reports that Jack Bodziak of Bodziak/Hayes Architects is both the architect and project’s applicant. He told sources that because of the site’s narrow measurements, he needed to maximize the space, posing both “architectural challenges” and “[making the project’s buildings] look a lot more imposing than they really are.” It’s possible that upon further review, Windward Pass Resort could face a height reduction but include more buildings.
St. Pete Rising notes that Beth Morean, a philanthropist and ceramic artist, owns the 2.27-acre parcel. Although the City Commission has plans to review the venture, the St. Pete Beach planning board recommended denying various aspects of the project, including a conditional use permit. It cited concerns surrounding noise pollution and traffic congestion as reasons for the recommendations.
Windward Pass Resort has been proposed for 3815, 3856, 3859, and 3861 Gulf Boulevard, St. Pete Beach, FL, 33706, in Pinellas County.
