Memorial Regional Hospital Moves Forward with $670 Million Expansion in Hollywood

The Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida is moving forward with a transformative $670 million expansion, marking one of the most significant capital projects in the hospital’s history. Unanimously approved by the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, the development will introduce a new Surgical and Patient Bed Tower designed to meet rising patient demand, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the delivery of advanced medical services across South Florida.

The project will unfold in two phases. The first phase includes the construction of the surgical tower, which is scheduled for completion in 2029. The second phase will involve the creation of a connector linking the new tower to the existing facility, with work expected to conclude in 2031. Throughout the process, Memorial Regional Hospital will remain fully operational with comprehensive plans in place to minimize disruptions for patients, staff, and visitors.

The expansion includes more than 400,000 square feet of new construction and nearly 50,000 square feet of renovations. The new tower will contain 150 acuity-adaptable beds, designed to support flexible, high-efficiency care. Surgical capacity will be significantly enhanced with 21 new operating rooms, including a hybrid OR equipped for advanced imaging, along with shelled space reserved for future growth. The number of preoperative and recovery bays will increase from 37 to 58, and a new sterile processing department will be built to streamline support for surgical operations.

Additional upgrades will include a new CT suite and satellite pharmacy located to serve the intensive care units more effectively. A redesigned main lobby and improved circulation paths will enhance wayfinding and access, creating a more welcoming and functional environment for patients and families. These changes reflect the hospital’s long-term strategy to elevate clinical capabilities while modernizing the patient experience.

The expansion will be funded through a mix of operational cash flow, debt financing, and investment strategies. Memorial Healthcare System’s stable financial position enables this large-scale investment while maintaining a focus on fiscal responsibility and long-term sustainability.

Robins & Morton is serving as the general contractor for the project. The privately held firm, based in Birmingham, Alabama, maintains a strong presence throughout the Southeast and Texas, with regional offices in Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando. The company employs approximately 400 workers across Florida, with around 200 based in South Florida.

Robins & Morton has been active on several major healthcare campuses throughout the region, with ongoing contracts exceeding $1 billion. Notable projects include UHealth at SoLé Mia, UHealth at Doral, UHealth Tower, the Gloria Drummond Patient Tower at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and the Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital.

The expansion of the Memorial Regional Hospital comes at a time of accelerated population growth and increasing healthcare demand across Florida. As one of the state’s most active healthcare builders, Robins & Morton is playing a leading role in delivering the infrastructure required to meet the evolving needs of communities across the region.
