Skanska has delivered the $34.69 million Fair Oaks Recreation Complex at 3400 East Louisiana Avenue in East Tampa. Designed by Howard + Associates and Convergence Design, and built by Skanska under a design-build delivery model, the newly completed 10.25-acre recreational campus is centered around a new 33,055-square-foot recreation center replacing the former facility.
The redevelopment combines the Fair Oaks Community Center, Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake, and adjacent properties into a unified recreational campus. The new community center is approximately five times larger than the original structure and expands the site’s indoor programming capacity with a full-size gymnasium, weight room, arts and music rooms, billiards space, multi-purpose rooms, and a computer lab.
“Our team is delivering a transformative recreational hub that will enhance quality of life for the entire East Tampa community,” said Chuck Jablon, senior vice president of construction for Skanska’s Florida building operations. “The completion of Fair Oaks Recreation Complex represents a meaningful investment in the health and wellness of the surrounding community, while also creating vibrant spaces for socializing, activities, and events that will bring together residents of all ages. I’m so proud to see this long- awaited vision become a reality.”
The redevelopment integrates the Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake and surrounding properties into a pedestrian-oriented campus layout. Outdoor amenities include a fenced playground with an ADA-compliant swing, an interactive splash pad with 18 lighted nozzles and a tree fountain, a youth athletic field, two basketball courts, two pickleball courts, shuffleboard courts, and approximately 1.5 miles of walking trails.
Sustainability features include more than 500 rooftop-mounted solar panels installed atop the community center.
Additional members of the project team include AREHNA Engineering, Campo Engineering, Dark Moss, DeCaro Wilson, OCI Associates, Brightwater Solutions, VoltAir, Strategist Project Support Services, and KVJINC PR.
The completion of the project adds to Skanska’s portfolio of civic and recreational work across the Tampa Bay region, including the Tampa Convention Center, Coachman Park in Downtown Clearwater, the St. Petersburg Pier, Pier Approach and Gateway, and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa.
