The modern design of the new Fort Lauderdale Police Headquarters has been unveiled in a recent submission to the city’s Design Review Committee seeking approvals for the proposed facility in Downtown’s Sailboat Bend neighborhood. The new building is set to rise 3-stories and approximately 50-feet at 1300 West Broward Boulevard, the address of the current facility, and occupy a footprint of about 178,605 square feet. Within that footprint, the building will yield 190,980 square feet for the headquarters including a community facility, and 222,081 SF for the parking garage; 413,061 square feet in total. The architectural arm of AECOM is responsible for the design, with Orlando-based KEITH onboard as the civil engineer.

The property (Lot A) equals to 8.94 acres and is generally bounded by West Broward Boulevard on the north, Southwest 12th Avenue including the intersections of Southwest 1st and 2nd Streets on the east, Middle Street and the intersection with Southwest 13th Avenue on the south, and on the west along Lot B is Southwest 14th Avenue. The North Fork New River is just a few city blocks south of the site, and the Las Olas and Beverly Heights neighborhoods are just a 6 minute drive eastward. The northbound entrance to the I-95 is also near by, just a few blocks to the west.

The renderings reveal the new massive concrete superstructure featuring a cantilevered 3rd floor hanging over the northern side of podium, clad in a variety of materials including lightly sandblasted architectural concrete panels, lightly tinted impact resistant glass windows framed with aluminum mullions, and painted smooth stucco. Several elevations of the structure feature painted aluminum slats on metal framing, and precast concrete eyebrows span the nearly the entire 1st and 3rd floors. Several concrete columns will be exposed on the 2nd level along the western elevation. The section of the building reserved for the community facility is connected to the main structure via a subtly curving lobby/passageway, which also features a skylight for maximum lighting conditions. The police department’s logo is placed on the northeastern corner of the building, and ample landscaping will be planted throughout the property.

Fort Lauderdale’s Design Review Committee will be reviewing the submittal on July 13, 2021 as it is listed on the agenda for that day.

According to the Police Department’s official website, several major firms are involved in the project including Thorton Thomasetti, Adams Consulting Group, Inc., Hammond & Associates, Inc., THA Consulting, and Construction Moisture Consulting, Inc.

Moss Construction has been hired to manage construction. Construction will occur in 4 phases, with the parking garage rising first during Phase 1.

Demolition permits will be required to remove the current facility as well as a few other small structures on site.

  1. A typo in the second paragraph misidentifies “Southwest 12th Avenue” as “Street”…

    Project looks great!

  2. Love it, looks fantastic!
