In the aftermath of a Covid-19 pandemic, Florida is seeing a boom in convenience store development. But not just convenience stores: Wawas. Coming July 15, 2021, a new Wawa will open in Okeechobee, FL. The Pennsylvania-based chain has been expanding south in the recent years, totaling 221 stores statewide.
The new Wawa will be one story above grade and feature 6,055 to 6,119 square feet of new construction. In addition to having a 16 fuel pumps, the Wawa will also have a supermarket that serves sandwiches and hot beverages. According to the Construction Journal, construction is anticipated to cost around $1.2 million.
Wawa’s main competitor is 7-11 and Speedway, which have been picking up traction to keep up with demand. The want for app-based services has compelled Wawa to expand its location base. It is anticipated that within the next few years, Florida will surpass New Jersey in having the most Wawa stores.
The new Wawa will feature delivery, in-store shopping, and curbside pickup. Its physical address is SR 70 and NE 2nd Ave, Okeechobee, FL, 34972. It will be located in Okeechobee County. Per the 2020 census, Okeechobee had over 5,700 residents. In terms of vicinity, the Wawa will be in walking distance of Flagler Park and Kiwanis Park.
