You’ve never seen a Target or Aldi quite like this––at least in South Florida. Presently, Swerdlow Group is overseeing the development of a mixed-use retail and residential space coming soon Overtown, Miami. Instead of building a one-story, traditional shopping center and residential area, the singular building will tower 19 stories.
Per the South Florida Business Journal, the building has been dubbed “Sawyer’s Walk.” Resting on 3.4 acres of land, its retail space will comprise 250,000 square feet of new construction, “anchored by a 50,000 square-foot Target and 25,000-square-foot Aldi.” Plans are also underway for a Ross and Burlington Coat Factory.
One of the tower’s most defining features is its residential spaces. They have been intentionally set aside for low-income seniors. Residents will be able to choose from about 580 luxury units, ranging from studios to two-bedroom homes. No word yet as to how much rent will be.
Residents will have the option of using the residence’s clubhouse, entertainment space, and fitness club. There will also be a pool on the top floor. In total, the project will require 1.4 million square feet of construction.
Sawyer’s Walk’s physical address is listed as 249 N.W. Sixth St., Miami, FL. 33136. More specifically, the venture is located near Overtown, a historical Black community in South Florida. In its heyday, the area was frequented by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.
