In the early hours of the morning on June 24, 2021, Champlain Towers South, a luxury condominium located in Surfside, FL, suffered a partial collapse. At the time of publication, at least one resident was dead, while over 100 more were unaccounted for.
The building, which was erected in 1981, had finally arrived at its 40-year mark. The City of Surfside was intending to send inspectors to the site, who would evaluate the structural integrity of the building. This did not happen, as the ring wing of the building collapsed before its inspection date.
Right now, there is no information as to why the 12-story building collapsed. Speculation is that recent construction in the area put pressure on the building’s foundation. Mayor of Surfside Charles Burkett noted that while the building was undergoing rooftop maintenance, this should not have contributed to the incident.
While the rescue mission is still undergoing, Surfside is investigating the cause of the collapse. Champlain Towers South resident and former vice mayor of Surfside, Barry Cohen, told the Today show that he questioned the building’s stability after noting cracked pavers around the community pool. This suspicion has not yet been verified by the city.
Champlain Towers South’s units range anywhere from $600,000 to $700,000 to own. Presently, survivors have been relocated to hotels in the nearby area. The location’s physical address is listed as 8777 Collins Avenue, Surfside, FL, 33154.
