While Florida has 520 airports statewide, only 24 of them offer international travel. One of those airports, Southwest Florida International, is currently undergoing a $184 million expansion. The goal is to not only expand certain terminals but consolidate certain aspects to promote efficiency, per the Construction Journal.
More specifically, the project plans to extend the queues located in the north-facing terminal. This will not only allow more people to pass through security but also meet the airport’s growing needs. The most recent data from the Lee County Port Authority notes that in April 2021 alone, the airport served over 1.2 million passengers.

Presently, 12 contractors are bidding on the project, some of them based out of Fort Myers, others in the Tampa Bay Area, and one from out of state. The bids were due June 15, 2021. It was done in the competitive bidding style, meaning that public entities were allowed to post their bids with full transparency.
The project itself is being overseen by the Lee County Port Authority Purchasing, which oversees the airport’s expansion, operation, and safety. The engineer and architect on the renovations is Atkins North Americas Incorporated, which is based out of Tampa, FL. In the past, the agency has worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Texas Department of Transportation.
