Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a 15-acre conservation and research center located in Sarasota, FL. Now, after being in operation for almost 50 years, the center is expanding. Per the Construction Journal, the $72 million project seeks to add animal/plant/fish facilities and a 450-spot parking garage.
Sources show that the expansion intends to bring over 35,000 square feet of new construction. The project will provide new educational facilities, which will comprise an herbarium, space for over 35,000 preserved specimens, and rare botanical books from the 1800s.
Per the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ website: “This undertaking is vital to preserving our history, safeguarding the world’s best scientifically documented plant collections of their kind, and sustaining our future — both environmentally and financially.” Following the official groundbreaking ceremony in June 2021, construction began a month later in July 2021.
The parking garage, which intends to service the garden’s growing attendance rate, will rise one story above grade and require over 4,300 square feet of new construction. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens also has plans to make the premises available via water taxi. The garage will have a solar-powered rooftop.
This is just phase one of the three renovations that Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has in store. Per the Tampa Bay Business Journal, all three phases will require $92 million total to complete. The project will take several years.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ physical location is 811 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota, FL, 34236.
