Foundation work has begun for The Residences at 400 Central, a 46-story mixed-use building at 400 Central Avenue in Downtown St. Petersburg. Slated to become the city’s tallest building, the 515-foot-tall structure is designed by Miami-based Arquitectonica with interiors by Celano Design Studio and is being developed by New York City-based Red Apple Real Estate, led by John Catsimatidis. The project will yield 1.3 million square feet of space including 301 residential units, 35,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities, retail and restaurant space, Class A office space, and a rooftop observatory with a view from Tampa Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. This first stage of foundation construction is expected to be completed in the next few months, and vertical constriction is expected to begin in early 2023.

In August, Red Apple Real Estate formally signed the Suffolk Construction Co. (Suffolk) as the tower’s general contractor, who just recently completed initial site work and extensive underground testing, and has kicked off construction of the permanent foundation for the new 46-story mixed-use tower. Suffolk has built some of the nation’s most exciting and substantial real estate development projects, including the Tampa Edition Hotel and Residences, as well as New York City’s Hudson Exchange West tower, the Montage Big Sky Residences near Yellowstone National Park, and recently a rail station and two towers in Miami. In preparation for the recent hurricane, the team at Suffolk Suffolk lowered and secured all construction equipment. 400 Central sustained no damage, and construction has now resumed. 400 Central is not within a flood zone and was located in a Non-Evacuation Zone.

In contrast to the construction of many other downtown towers, these foundation elements will be drilled and then filled with steel reinforcing and high-strength concrete rather than pounded into the ground – minimizing the disturbance to the project’s downtown neighbors. Crews are drilling a series of 89 cylindrical drilled foundation shafts, ranging from 48 inches in diameter and 87 feet deep to six feet in diameter and 166 feet deep, to support the tower.

“We are using the absolute state-of-the-art technology in construction for this iconic condominium tower,” said John Catsimatidis Sr., founder of Red Apple Real Estate and principal of the development company that is sponsoring development of The Residences at 400 Central. “We have deep family ties to the St. Petersburg community, and I am thrilled to see work underway to create a special new community in the vibrant city center.”

When complete, The Residences at 400 Central will soar 515 feet above downtown St. Petersburg’s vibrant Central Avenue, capturing panoramic views from Tampa Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. This world-class residential tower will be full-service and the first of its kind in St. Petersburg to include a dedicated lifestyle coordinator who will activate the amenities and engage the community.
