In 1931, Wedgewood Golf Course was established in Lakeland, Florida. Then, in December 2021, developers purchased the 130-acre site for $4.5 million. Now, according to The Ledger, the site could find new life as a residential community called “Gibson Trails.”
The community, which will reach completion in phases, will include close to 1,000 homes. LkldNow notes that plans call for 60 single-family homes, 60 townhomes, and 834 apartments. They will be spread across multiple low-rise buildings, with the tallest one measuring four stories.
The community itself will butt up against the neighboring Audubon Oaks apartments. The publication notes that the previous proposal wanted 1,028 apartments, 16 family homes, assisted living units, and more than 200 townhomes.
Developers amended the plans so they would be approved by city officials. They approved the project 6-1 in the first week of December 2022. The only dissenting party has issues about the traffic Gibson Trails would generate.
Sources report that the venture is presently seeking zoning variances. Construction could start in June 2023. At this time, these sources don’t name a general contractor. However, they note that Kimley-Horn Lakeland is the civil engineer.
Gibson Trails could cost more than $370 million to complete. Gibson Trails’ address is 401 Carpenters Way, Lakeland, Florida, 33809, in Polk County.
