Florida Studio Theatre (FST) is the largest subscription theatre in the state. Now, it has big plans for a new multi-million-dollar venture in Sarasota, Florida. According to the company’s website, Florida State Theatre’s Art Plaza (called “Mulva Arts Plaza” in some sources) will measure 11 stories above grade, aiming to meet “FST’s artistic needs and serve its robust and growing audience.”
Per Broadway World, the venture will include 55 studio apartments intended for resident artists. Plans also call for 30 two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments for local Sarasota residents. Homes will comprise five of the tower’s 11 stories.
Plans also reveal a new mainstage theatre, two cabaret theatres, and 200 parking spots. Sarasota Magazine reports that construction on the parking garage will end in June 2024. Less than a year later, the two cabarets and mainstage will open. The grand opening is slated for January 2026.
The venture’s estimated to cost $28.5 million to complete. As of March 2022, developers had raised $17 million. Our sources list Florida Studio Theatre as the owner. C. Alan Anderson Architect designed the venture, and Freedman Consulting Group is the consultant.
These same sources list the plaza’s address as 1221 1st St., Sarasota, Florida, 34236, in Sarasota County.
