Stantec has been chosen to provide architectural, interior design, MEP, structural and civil engineering services for a new 21,000-square-foot animal hospital at Zoo Miami. The facility will replace the existing 5,600-square-foot hospital and expand zoo’s ability to treat more than 2,500 animals across nearly 400 species.

The new hospital will feature radiology and CT scan rooms, treatment and surgery spaces, a laboratory, pharmacy, and secure transportation docks. Designed with a focus on low-stress healing and recovery, the facility will include an intensive care unit, various animal wards, specialized aquatic pools for crocodilians, and padded induction stalls for hoof stock animals.

“This transformative expansion provides Zoo Miami with the ability to provide the highest standard of care to thousands of animals,” said Elvira Freire-Santamaria, principal and senior architect at Stantec. “Our design approach creates a flexible and transparent space that supports the zoo’s animal care, while also giving veterinary students the opportunity for education and industry experience.”

The hospital will incorporate educational and hands-on learning opportunities through partnerships with veterinary teaching programs, offering students internship experiences year-round. Stantec’s design includes wide hallways and large windows overlooking treatment areas, providing visitors with insight into the veterinary care process.

Construction is expected to begin in winter 2025, with completion slated for early 2027.
