Walt Disney World Resort has decided to address Florida’s affordable housing crisis with a community of its own. The venture, resting on an 80-acre parcel, will offer 1,300 affordable housing units. Residency is restricted to households falling below a certain income level, and residency is also open to Disney World cast members.
At this time, the project’s still in its infancy, and rent information is not currently available. However, according to The Disney Blog, the organization presently owns and operates Flamingo Crossing, which primarily houses college-age cast members. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in that community averages around $650 a month.
Walt Disney World Resort reported yesterday that it had selected a developer for the 1,300-home community: The Michaels Organization. Per WFTV 9, the developer has multiple communities in many states, with developments in Tampa, Fort Pierce, and Fort Lauderdale. This will be its first housing development in the Orlando area.
Walt Disney World Resort has not released an official timeline for when the community will start and finish construction. However, it notes that construction will yield new jobs in the Central Florida area. Conceptual renderings are available online, although they’re subject to change. Renderings show a sprawling community featuring what appear to be low- to mid-rise buildings with various communal amenities, including a swimming pool.
The 1,300-home community does not have an official name. However, sources note that it’s located west of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Florida 429 in Buena Vista.
