Officials recently broke ground on the highly anticipated Sprowls Horizon Sports Park, a 39-acre sports complex in Pinellas County.

The new facility, named in honor of former Florida Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls, replaces an aging youth sports park with a state-of-the-art center with a host of amenities. The complex will feature up to six baseball and softball fields, a full-sized artificial turf soccer field, and a replacement of the outdoor hockey rink provided by the Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hockey Foundation.

Amenities include a roller rink, baseball/softball fields, and other offerings. Image from the venture’s website

Originally planned as a renovation of the existing park, a generous $13.5 million grant from the state, approved by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022, enabled the city to pursue more extensive upgrades. The project will cost an estimated $25 million to $30 million to complete, per St. Pete Rising.

The venture is expected to attract athletes from across the country, boosting the local sports scene and economy. Sprowls Horizon Sports Park is slated to open summer 2025. It’s currently undergoing construction at 4100 66th Avenue North, Pinellas Park, FL, 33781, in Pinellas County.
